The Israeli-Holstein breed has been developed by the Israeli Genetic Improvement System. Since this cow has been selected for generations in the harsh conditions of the Israeli climate, she is very well adapted to the local enviroment - a long and hot summer and several endemic diseases.

 

 

The Israeli cow has the highest national milk yield (production/cow/year) in the world, in milk volume and in milk solids.
 

 

The largest dairy in Israel – Tnuva, processes a total of 850 million litres of milk a year.
 

 

115,000 cows on 972 farms make up the Israeli dairy herd. Each cow produces an annual average of 11,653 kg of milk, 372 kg of Protein and 421 kg of Fat. The best yielding cow in Israel yielded more than 18,700 Kg of milk.

 

 

Since Israeli cows yield less milk during the hot summer, the extra milk that is produced during the winter is made into milk powder, to be used through the year. Special cooling systems help improve the cows conditions and milk yield

 

 

The Israeli breeding program tests 50 candidate bulls each year, 5 of which will join the 20-bulls responsible for about 350,000 Artificial Inseminations preformed each year in Israel.
 

 

A comprehensive software system has been developed by the Israeli cattle Breeders Association (ICBA) to monitor and record data from the milking parlor and give the herd manager information regarding herd management, feeding, milk production, genetic management etc.

 

 

The Israeli dairy Herd book database collects information on aprox. 99,537 cows, 90% of the cows in the country. Each cow's data is recorded, saved and analyzed: milk production, milk laboratory tests, genetic line, calves born, diseases and treatments etc.

 

 

More than 2,500 families raise sheep and goats: from traditional nomadic herds keepers to intensive zero-grazing dairy and meat farms.

 

 

9,0 million liters of sheep's milk and 11.1 million liters of goat's milk are produced in Israel annually. Being of high quality and under stringent hygienic supervision, sheep and goat cheeses are exported, mainly to the USA.
