After making small movements over the last two days, the CME barrel market resumed its downward trajectory and closed at $2.1200 per pound, $0.0325 lower. Blocks also declined, shedding two cents to finish the day at $2.0075 per pound. Five lots of blocks changed hands, and there were no barrel trades. Spot butter, meanwhile, dipped, climbed, then dipped again through the session, ending unchanged at $2.6800 per pound. Sixteen lots traded.

CME cheese markets tumbled well off recent highs ahead of USDA’s July Cold Storage report. Barrels plunged $0.1225 to $2.1000 per pound, the biggest single-day drop since November 2020. Blocks also slid, but at a slower pace, settling at $2.0375 per pound, down four cents. Two lots of blocks and zero loads of barrels traded. Butter continued its trend of decreasing prices with high volume. Spot butter closed at $3.1300 per pound, two cents lower, with 22 loads exchanged.

Milk Production report finished off a volatile week in Dairy Markets. U.S. milk production dropped 0.9% year-over-year in May, slightly below Ever.Ag expectations. Given recent strength in dairy markets, this report may not add any additional fuel to the fire. Cow numbers declined 68,000 head compared to last year, although USDA noted 5,000 more cows in May versus April. Both Texas and New Mexico grew by 3,000 head each, but that still leaves New Mexico down 42,000 head from a year ago.
